Your First Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Class

  • So, you've decided to dip your toes (or perhaps throw yourself headfirst) into the world of BJJ—you're in for one heck of a ride! But don’t worry, because your first BJJ class is about to be an experience you won't soon forget, and we're here to ensure you're as comfortable and prepared as can be.

  • First things first, let's talk attire. You might envision yourself in a badass gi, ready to grapple like a seasoned pro, but hold your horses! For your first class, all you need are some gym shorts or leggings and a T-shirt. That's it! No fancy gear required. Just show up with an open mind and a willingness to learn, and you'll fit right in. Oh, and don't forget to strip off any bling or piercings—let's keep it safe and stylish, folks. Also, shoes - they're for walking up to the mats only—once you're there, they're outta there!

No shoes on the mats, ever

  • Now, as you step onto the mats, you’ll feel nervous—and that's totally normal. But here's the thing: everyone in that room, from the instructors to your teammates, has been exactly where you are. We've all had our first class, stumbled through techniques, and felt a little lost on the mat. So, take a deep breath and know that you're in a fun and relaxed environment where everyone is rooting for your success.

  • As the class gets underway, you'll start to learn the fundamentals of BJJ—the grips, the positions, the submissions, and all those extra details. Don't worry if it feels like a lot to take in at first. BJJ is a complex art with endless layers, and that's what makes it so crazy addictive! Just focus on absorbing what you can, asking questions when you're unsure, and most importantly, having a laugh!

  • Don't be afraid to tap. In fact, embrace it! Tapping will be your best friend in BJJ—it's how you communicate to your partner that you've reached your limit and need an out. So, tap early, tap often, and leave your ego at the door. Trust us, nobody's keeping score yet, and everyone's focused on helping each other improve.

  • As your first class comes to a close, line up at the back (for now, it’s a grade thing) and take a moment to reflect on how far you've come in just one session. You showed up, you tried something new, and you survived (congrats!). Whether you're hooked on the "gentle art" or still on the fence, pat yourself on the back for taking that first step—it's no small feat!

  • So, dear future BJJ enthusiast, welcome to the fold. Your journey in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is just beginning, and we couldn't be more thrilled to have you walking the Dark Path. Get ready to roll, laugh, and maybe even stumble a bit along the way. Remember, we're all in this together. Let's do this!
