Understanding the Points System in IBJJF Competitions

If you're new to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) competitions sanctioned by the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF), understanding the scoring system is essential for both competitors and spectators alike. The points system in IBJJF competitions is designed to reward effective grappling techniques and control positions.

Let's break it down, here is the IBJJF points system simplified:

1. Stabilizing Positions: Points are awarded when a competitor secures a stable position for at least 3 seconds. These positions include mount, back control, side control, and knee on belly. Mount and back control earn 4 points each, while side control and knee on belly earn 2 points each.

2. Escaping Submission Hold: If a competitor escapes a submission hold by exiting the match area, the opponent who applied the submission is awarded 2 points.

3. No Double Points: Competitors won't receive additional points if they voluntarily give up a position they've already scored points for and then regain it.

4. Escaping and Scoring: When escaping a submission hold while in a point-scoring position, competitors must stabilize the position for 3 seconds to earn points.

5. Interruption by Submission Attempt: If a submission attempt interrupts the stabilization count, the athlete gains an advantage for the achieved positions.

6. Cumulative Points: Points accumulate as competitors progress through various point-scoring positions, as long as they maintain control.

7. Guard Pulling: If both competitors pull guard simultaneously, the one who achieves the top position first earns an advantage.

8. Takedown Points: Executing takedowns where the opponent lands on their back, sideways, or seated, and stabilizing the position for 3 seconds earns 2 points.

9. Guard Pass Points: Passing the opponent's guard or half-guard and controlling side or north-south positions for 3 seconds earns 3 points.

10. Knee on Belly Points: Placing the knee or shin on the opponent's belly, chest, or ribs for 3 seconds earns 2 points.

11. Mount and Back Mount Points: Achieving mount or back mount positions for 3 seconds earns 4 points each.

12. Back Control Points: Taking control of the opponent's back with both hooks in for 3 seconds earns 4 points.

13. Sweep Points: Reversing the opponent's position from guard or half-guard and maintaining control for 3 seconds earns 2 points.

Understanding the points system not only helps competitors strategize during matches but also enhances spectators' appreciation for the technical aspects of BJJ. Whether you're stepping onto the mat or cheering from the sidelines, grasping these basics will deepen your understanding and enjoyment of IBJJF competitions.
